Robotics is a field that has only relatively recently become accessible to children, and is generally considered to be an effective introduction towards understanding programming and the fundamentals of computer science. Robotics is an inherently interesting area that offers a great launching pad for students to realize their creative ideas and develop their social skills.
STEM-based learning (i.e science, technology, engineering and mathematics) is considered a hugely beneficial approach towards teaching as it promotes technical skills in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. Rather than teach the four disciplines as separate and discrete subjects, STEM integrates them into a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world applications.
Robotics will undoubtedly become a huge part of our children’s future, and the advantages of learning robotics are not just technology based – creative projects involving robotics generally require a team effort, strong coordination, and social awareness. A strong robotics curriculum can create leaders and develop organisational and leadership skills at a very early age. Through the process of building a robot in the classroom students explore many different learning pathways that can be easily applied to other disciplines.
Core programmatic concepts can often be too abstract to be easily understood by students, but robotics offer a tactile approach towards probably-solving. Children learn the need for precise instructions, clear communication, and over time encourage an understanding of the entire engineering process. Robotics helps address the growing demand for teaching STEM subjects in schools, and children who are proficient in these subjects are generally more employable in later life.
