What can parents do to encourage Coding Skills in their Kids?

The importance of a parents role in familiarising their child with technology cannot be understated. We can already observe that software plays a major part in the way children of today learn and interact socially.

There are numerous resources online that can help steer kids towards coding and software from a young age. ‘Gameification’ has become very popular, where core programming concepts are presented as a game in a way that can be easily understood. These concepts are learned as the player progresses through the game. Some of the best example of such games are Daisy the Dinosaur,  Move the Turtle, and Scratch, which are each distributed across various platforms.


There are many actions a parent can take to nurture the child’s interest in coding from an early age, regardless of their own proficiency in the area. As a child’s closest advocate, it is important for a parent to know what local resources are available to support their child’s interest in coding. Talk to your child’s teacher or school administrators about what facilities they have to offer

If there are no locally available resources, a parent should aim to provide the basic resources for their child. Obviously access to a computer is most important, however some time should also be invested directing the child towards the correct resources and learning tools. Finding a mentor or someone who is knowledgeable in the area can be of huge benefit to a child.

Kids Learning to code can be a challenging and frustrating experience, and it is important that there is someone available to encourage your child through their short-term failures and remind them of how far they have come in their understanding from where they began. Like learning any language, it will take time and effort to progress, and parents should reinforce positive learning every step along the way.
